I run my own Matrix server rather than relying on a corporate messaging platform - same idea as the rest of this site: own your stack where you can.

Matrix is an open, decentralized chat protocol. Think of it like email for instant messaging - you can talk to anyone on any Matrix server (or bridge over to Discord, Signal, etc.) without needing an account with a specific company.

To get in touch or join a room, you'll need a Matrix client. A few solid ones:

• Element - the reference client, works everywhere (web, desktop, mobile), good default choice.
• FluffyChat - clean and simple, great on mobile.
• SchildiChat - based with a few extra features.
